Where heritage meets modern living

The story begins in 1846, when Joseph Gilbert acquired a parcel of land in what was originally known as “Gilbert Town” and would later become the suburb of Gilberton. Just a few years later, in 1849, the doors of The Buckingham Arms first opened under the management of William Stevens, marking the beginning of a legacy.

In 1869, the hotel entered a new era when the esteemed Simpson family took over its operation. Led by Frederick John Simpson, the hotel thrived as a local hub. Following Frederick’s passing, his wife Hannah and their son Vincent continued to run the hotel for decades to come.

An iconic moment arose in 1955, when Seymour Matthews acquired the hotel and introduced the now-legendary smorgasbord, which quickly became a community favourite. The Matthews family upheld the legacy of The Buckingham Arms with pride, overseeing its operation for nearly 70 years.

In 2022, after more than 170 years of service, the hotel closed its doors, drawing the curtain on one chapter, while paving the way for its next.

Now, the hotel, long renowned for bringing people together to enjoy a feast of fine food and celebrations will live on. This cherished landmark will be reinvigorated and continue the essence of past loved traditions while melding heritage and modern sophistication of luxurious residences as one.

Citify will create a welcoming place where history meets the future and offers a highly rewarding and fulfilling way of life.
